A natural encounter of lacquer and clay
- Haiming researches the fusion between lacquer and ceramics
- He runs a studio and trains apprentices to sustain the craft
- His works feature clashing materials, such as mother-of-pearl, silver leaf and eggshell
Haiming Jiang's work breaks down the barriers between lacquer and ceramics, transforming functional objects into vessels of art expression. After studying contemporary art and mural painting at the China Academy of Art, he pursued a master's degree in lacquer. Haiming now teaches at a university in Yixing, the ceramic capital of China, and investigates the fusion of lacquer with local ceramics. Through rigorous experimentation, he resolves critical technical obstacles, notably the adhesion of lacquer to ceramic surfaces, and continuously develops his distinctive aesthetic language. "The moment I touched the clay, I lost track of time and entered a state of selflessness. I fell in love with the material," he says. Beyond teaching, in 2013, Haiming established an art space to exhibit his works and provide advanced training for graduates.

INTERVIEW
After applying the first layer of lacquer, I place the piece in the oven for heat polymerisation, which creates a stronger bond. I also use a laser engraver to cut mother-of-pearl into desired shapes and inlay them into my artwork.
I mainly find inspiration in nature. Drawn to flora and fauna, I enjoy spending time in the mountains. My works often feature silhouettes of forms found in nature, from pebble-shaped vessels to vases covered in sunset-coloured lacquer.
In 2021, I won the gold award at the Shen Shaoan Award International Lacquer Art Competition. Since then, growing interest in my work has brought me to a wider audience and opened the door to several opportunities.
I learned the real value of having the chance to pursue a practice you truly enjoy. It is the ultimate blessing.
