Harmonies of clay and culture

  • Zhaojing's practice emphasises ceramic heritage as a historical necessity
  • She is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and a guest researcher at Kyoto City University of Arts
  • Through her approach to clay, she studies society and the evolution of culture

Zhaojing Wang treats ceramics as social materials capable of telling their own stories. By blending and firing clays gathered from different regions, she evokes the complexity and hybridity of different local cultures, allowing the material to speak of collective memory and social mobility. "The transmission of Intangible Cultural Heritage is not simply a matter of nostalgia, but a historical expression of culture and identity," she says. Zhaojing's approach to the ancient technique of jiaotai, known as neriage marbled clay originating in China's Tang dynasty, is not one of faithful reproduction. Instead, it is a way of understanding both the material and the self, while reactivating cultural memory through a contemporary artistic practice. Zhaojing's work has been awarded and exhibited internationally, including in China, Italy, Japan and South Korea.

Zhaojing Wang 王赵婧 is a rising star: she began her career in 2020 and she started teaching in 2024.

INTERVIEW

Initially, I viewed clay merely as an artistic medium. This early detachment paradoxically deepened my understanding of ceramics, revealing them as both concrete artifacts and abstract symbols within human civilisation. This insight then allowed me to collaborate with clay with precise intent.

Local materials grounded my early work. As I moved to different regions, the meanings they carried expanded through new landscapes. Craft drives global-local dialogue: local materials provide a sense of origin, and cross-regional material and techniques create lasting value.

My ceramic practice, deeply rooted in a sense of place, was shaped by the years I spent in Jingdezhen. Its production, traditions and artisan community, profoundly influenced the way I work with my materials. Regional culture is a living, evolving resource. In a global craft context of circulating materials, ideas and techniques, it must be an open methodology, not a fixed style.

The past provides historical resources that inform my practice. My present work reconsiders traditional craft, seeking new forms driven by society and technology. In the future, by combining traditional craftsmanship and contemporary ideas, I hope my work addresses questions of culture, materiality and environmental conservation
