Born into a line of Su or Suzhou embroidery master artisans, Xue Zhang initially pursued a career in international finance before returning to save his hometown’s dwindling craft. As a rare male practitioner, Xue honours classical needlework and Jiangnan aesthetics in his work, while boldly departing from opulent traditions toward modern minimalism. "I am driven by a desire to experiment with materials," he explains. Xue bridges silk threads with ceramics, kesi tapestry, digital technology and everyday design. He collaborates across watchmaking, lifestyle design and art institutions, evolving the 2,000-year-old craft beyond the display frame. Through his works, he conveys a subtle message around slow making, human wisdom and the rhythms of contemporary life globally.
