Contemplation on the here and now

  • Deimantė makes large-scale ceramic sculptures, inspired by nature's slow life
  • She learned the techniques of her craft by working alongside Noe Kuremoto in Zarasai
  • Her works evoke a meditative state and invite inward reflection

Deimantė Maciūtė is a ceramicist who found her way to ceramics through her love for nature. "As a psychology graduate, I never expected to be a ceramicist living in the countryside," she shares. Deimantė was greatly influenced by the Japanese artist Noe Kuremoto, in whose studio she worked as an assistant for six months. Thanks to Noe, Deimantė discovered her own philosophical approach to ceramics, and explored materiality and texture. "While working as an assistant, I not only learned the subtleties of the techniques used in working with clay, but I also experienced ceramics as a way of life," she says. Today, she lives by a lake, surrounded by nature, following the slower pace of life in the countryside. This influences her work to be slow, meditative, delicate and monumental, with earthy colours and sleek shapes.

What drew you to ceramics?
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2021, I moved to Zarasai, a remote region that has always attracted a wide range of artists and makers. The main catalyst to my journey with ceramics was working as an assistant at the Japanese artist Noe Kuremoto's studio. Ceramics came into my life completely unexpectedly, almost as if the craft chose me.
What do you aim to achieve with your work?
Clay is the main material and tool I use, and with it I aim to make ceramic objects that evoke and crystallise a meditative state. I want my pieces to invite everyone to feel their own presence and highlight the magical properties of our reality.
What does working with ceramics mean to you?
I use the medium of ceramics as a form of artistic expression to explore themes of meditation, the cyclical properties of nature, introspection and consciousness. Pieces that at first glance could be reduced to vases or other vessels become objects open to interpretation, inviting us to look at them as experiences.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I get inspired by experimenting with clay, and by spending time in the countryside when nothing much is happening and everything is in the here and now. In my daily life, I am mindful to live in sync with nature and observe my surroundings. Nature is all around, so there is a lot going on, whether it is some birds flying by or a lynx appearing.
