Silent Song 12 was crafted using shallang, a traditional Hungarian ornamental technique. Hundreds of strips of vegetable tanned leather were arranged over a bespoke metal frame covered with split leather, achieving a three-dimensional structure. Sofia Shazak interpreted Es Devlin’s design through this rare and arcane technique, which she mastered after years of research based on archival photographs and experimentation. Highly intricate and ornate, shallang represents an important part of Hungary’s equestrian craft heritage, and was originally used to decorate horse bridles.
