Silent Song 2

Silent Song 2 was hand woven on a bespoke circular loom, which the artist devised specifically for the making of this artwork. The warp and weft were created from African wax-print fabrics, with inserts of cotton twine, satin and polyester. Princia Matungulu developed Es Devlin’s design by drawing inspiration from Congolese oral traditions of the Kasaï region, where warning bells also fulfilled ethical purposes. Her interpretation invites reflection on how communities respond to the unknown, and how the act of listening can transform diffidence into a shared responsibility.
