Silent Song 1

Silent Song 1 was carved from a slab of Moleanos limestone by nine undergraduate students of the BA Stonecarving course. The collaborative project challenged the students to translate the original concept into stone using historical techniques, traditional chisels and lettering templates. Es Devlin’s design renders a soundless rhythm in stone through a spiral of diminishing ellipses. As the intervals tighten toward the centre, the composition draws the eye inward, creating the visual metaphor of a sound fading rhythmically to silence. The asymmetry of the pattern evokes the human touch through the perceptual ambiguity of movement that can be seen, but not heard.
