Silent Song 8 was crafted using straw marquetry layered in shades from light to dark over a convex base, to create a sense of depth. The coloured straw was sanded where the lines overlap to obtain a blurred, watercolour effect. Alberte Svendsen drew inspiration from the earthy tones and graphic pattern of the common kestrel’s plumage to develop the hypnotic symmetry of Es Devlin’s design. Variations in the straw, shaped by the direction of the fibres and the reflections of light, bring dynamism to the composition.
