Belonging

This chest by Sasha Sykes was created with dried flora, gathered in the gardens of Lismore Castle, Ireland, and embedded in resin. The material was built up through successive layers, in a manner similar to lacquering, then routed into shape and bonded to a bespoke acrylic hinge. It was finished through a 12-stage sanding and polishing process. Imagined as somewhere between a medieval herb chest and a Victorian specimen book, the work reflects on the idea of belonging. Once used to carry a family’s possessions between homes, the chest raises the question of where both the object and the family truly belong.
