Life Vessel

This vessel by Kosuke Araki was hand built from powdered food waste mixed with urushi lacquer. The material, made of non-edible parts of crops, such as peels, stems, leaves, roots and rinds, as well as animal bones, was shaped into form and left to harden. Successive layers of lacquer were then applied to finish and refine the surface. Inspired by the ancient role of vessels in preserving and carrying food, water and flowers, the work is a symbol of life, created from the very elements that sustain it.
