Papier-mâché

These sculptures were designed by Tahir Sultan and crafted by Shabir Hussain Khawaja, Qasim Ali Khawaja and Ghulam Mehdi respectively. The forms were created from newspaper papier-mâché, shaped around a wooden mould. Once dried, they were hand painted with intricate motifs. Starting from the egg as a symbol for new beginnings, the pieces endeavour to contemporise traditional Kashmiri craft techniques. At the origin of the series is the motif on Gul-e-Raah, which is a reinterpretation of a 200-year-old Bedouin chieftain’s coat owned by the artist’s father and embroidered by Kashmiri artisans.
