• Yuefeng fuses bamboo weaving with lacquer art to create imposing sculptures
• Product design was his first area of study and he veered into craft out of fascination
• His creations celebrate slow making and Chinese philosophical concepts

Yuefeng He's original career was in product design, but a close encounter with craftsmanship at the age of 30 shifted his path towards a practice in the handmade. Driven by a deep curiosity about artisanal traditions, materials and processes, he taught himself bamboo weaving, along with various other Chinese heritage crafts. "I travelled around China to artisans' workshops and spent time learning with them. It was a very enriching experience," he says. Today, Yuefeng integrates the algorithmic thinking of architecture and product development to his design and making. His large-scale structured forms are handwoven from bamboo and further embellished with lacquer, to raise questions around void, being and the passage of time. His work, Bamboo Rock, was shortlisted for the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize 2024.
