Wooden forms emerging from heritage

Based in Casablanca, Hamza Kadiri Studio creates contemporary sculptures primarily in ash wood, for its structural coherence and controlled resistance. Founder Hamza Kadiri was influenced by his father who spoke of the Fez workshops and the generations of master woodworkers who contributed to historic monuments, including the University of Al Quaraouiyine. "This heritage was never a destination, but a starting point for developing my own sculptural language," he says.

Today, under Hamza's artistic direction, the studio team ensure each sculpture develops through observation, adjustment and refinement, until the wood reaches a point where it can transform without losing its structural integrity. "The time I spent in Japan sharpened my sense of rigour and reinforced my conviction that a work exists only through the absolute quality of its execution," he says. Built around recurring themes of transformation, resistance and balance, Hamza Kadiri Studio’s works reflect an evolving sculptural language. Their works are held in the permanent collection of the Qatar National Museum of Islamic Arts.
