A new direction in copper artistry

  • Bingren is the fourth generation preserving his family’s copper art tradition
  • He pioneered molten copper art in China, expanding the artistic possibilities through natural forms
  • His techniques combine copper with enamel, gilding and inlay

Bingren Zhu comes from a family that has practised copper craftsmanship for nearly 150 years. Passed down through five generations, the tradition survived periods of upheaval and was revived after China's Reform and Opening-Up. As the fourth-generation inheritor, Bingren has dedicated himself to preserving this legacy while exploring new artistic possibilities within the medium. A defining moment came in 2006 during the construction of Tianning Pagoda, where Bingren encountered naturally formed molten-copper crystallisations. "The beauty of these forms was something no human hand could carve," he shares. Fascinated by these organic forms, he studied them and eventually developed molten copper art. By allowing copper to flow freely beyond the limits of traditional moulds, he discovered a new artistic language that continues to shape his practice today.

Bingren Zhu 朱炳仁 is a master artisan: he began his career in 1982 and he started teaching in 1983.

INTERVIEW

One of my most memorable moments was opening the Jiangnan Copper House to the public in 2006. My family and I made significant personal sacrifices to build it, but seeing visitors freely experience copper art affirmed my belief that art should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.

Inspired by traditional polychrome and enamel techniques, I developed the gengcai method. Through it, copper can display a remarkably rich range of colours, achieving luminous and vibrant surfaces that challenge conventional perceptions of the material.

Hangzhou has profoundly shaped my work. Inspired by the city’s history and cultural heritage, I have contributed to projects such as the reconstruction of Leifeng Pagoda and works celebrating the Grand Canal. The city has nurtured my creativity, and my work has become part of its cultural landscape.

What I enjoy most is the dialogue with copper, in watching an ordinary piece of metal come to life through traditional techniques or in the unpredictable flow of molten copper. I also find great fulfillment in preserving and reinterpreting traditional culture through my work.
