Shining a light on reclaimed copper

  • Emmet reimagines waste materials into creative objects
  • His work combines sleek design with craftsmanship
  • He creates modern pieces for the home

Emmet Bosonnet is the founder of kopper kreation, an Irish company with repurposed materials at its core. Emmet trained as an engineer. While he was working for a company that made heating systems, he noticed the large amount of copper going to waste. He began to make products from this material. From these beginnings, he started to hone his craft skills and connect with his material, becoming a skilled designer and craftsperson. "I estimate that 65-75% of my products are made from reused materials," he explains. Emmet sources these from scrapyards, engineers, installers and donations from individuals who are renovating their homes. He has a deep respect for the materials he uses and the environmental impact of waste. All of the objects Emmet makes are handmade and finished to enhance the natural qualities of the different raw materials.

Emmet Bosonnet is a rising star: he began his career in 2018 and he started teaching in 2023.

INTERVIEW

A classic candelabra was the first piece I made and it is still part of the range today, and selling well! When I started, I was not sure if other people would like my work but when I took part in my first market I sold out. It was a great feeling.

I really like working with copper as it is endlessly recyclable. It is also a material that ages. I enjoy the idea of creating work that people invest in and that will change with them throughout their life.

It varies a lot but I am not a big sketcher, I tend to make models and work in 3D directly. I also collaborate a lot, to push my thought process. For example, the Tesla collection was designed after an invitation to see a real Tesla coil.

I feel truly lucky to be doing something I love everyday. When I was working in a corporate job I felt the job was affecting me in a bad way. Now I am enjoying the creativity and freedom of making and running my own business, even if it is challenging at times.
