Emer Roberts creates edgy and elegant fine art jewellery. Informed by her sculptural background, her conceptual investigation of our fellow mammal, the rat, defines her work. Emer employs intricate mould-making processes to produce precious pieces of wearable art. Over the years, she has engaged in avant-garde collaborations with food philosophers, transforming rats into edible desserts via food-grade moulds, and utilising rat meat in conceptual banquets. These unconventional projects are the foundation of her Wearable Biology collection designs. In 2017, Emer set up her jewellery workshop and she has garnered acclaim ever since, winning prestigious awards from the Irish Design Institute, Future Makers, RDS Craft Award, and gaining recognition in British Vogue, Tatler UK, and Vanity Fair.

How did you learn your craft?: During my studies in sculpture, I experimented with multiple materials: resins, rubbers, metal welding and mould making. I slowly transitioned into design doing part time courses in basics of jewellery and metals.
How did the rat enter your work?: In 2008, in the midst of my Masters in Fine Art Sculpture, my brother chose to depart life. This was when the rat entered my work. Prior to this, my practice had revolved around mammal species and the rat was a succinct evolution at that specific time.
Do you use any particular techniques in your work?: Life casting from death is a constant within my practice and producing the lifelike effect of a taxidermic animal with the transferral of hair is an innovative technique from my own mould making processes.
Can you tell us about a key moment in your career?: Winning three design awards consecutively was a key moment, particularly as each award individually recognised the divergent styles that I was creating at the time.
