Alfio Bruschi is a modern-day artisan cobbler rediscovering the ancient craft of shoemaking in the Italian town of Montegranaro. Over the decades, Alfio has honed his skills, experimenting with innovative techniques inspired by travels across Europe, Russia, Japan, and South Korea. His shoemaking blends traditional techniques with innovative interpretations, reflecting both Italian and international styles. Rooted in his personal experiences, Alfio draws inspiration from nature, particularly mountainous landscapes that offer him tranquility and fresh perspectives. His creative growth is further fuelled by collaborations with designers, stylists and passionate clients. Committed to artisanal quality and minimising waste, Alfio crafts ethical footwear exclusively in his workshop. His designs are born from a collaborative process, sourcing materials only upon demand, making each piece unique and bespoke.

What defines your creative style?
My style today can be described as being characterised by vibrant colours, intricate details, and carefully orchestrated lighting, all merged together through the aesthetics of minimalism. Tomorrow it will be different, as it is in constant evolution.
What can be done to give young artisans in your field more opportunities?
Providing more opportunities by increasing their ability to showcase their craft is crucial for empowering young artisans. This enables them to expand their outreach beyond the local horizon and paves the way for their professional growth.
Is your craft in danger of disappearing?
For sure it is undergoing irreversible change. Globalisation has created an infinite army of automated cobblers who produce semi-identical products, and demand tends to follow unimaginative rules dictated by the system. This is what scares me the most, as it risks creating a situation where there is a complete lack of craftsmanship.
What do you love most about your craft?
The slow pace of time, the workshop which is a very familiar space for me and the rhythm of a professional life that changes and transforms in line with my life experiences.
