During this 130-hour course, craftsman Jean Baptiste Van Den Heede will teach his students the principles of carpentry and joinery. From basic cutting exercises with a saw and chisels to understanding wood types used in cabinetmaking, marquetry and carving. Participants will make a wooden toy or carpentry tool as well as a side table. During the course, the master craftsman will observe the students closely and give guidance on precision, technologies of woodworking, tools and assembly techniques in woodworking.

In this course, the second of a series of three, students will work on making a stool, tray and some cabinet furniture. They will also be taking a look at geometric carving and assembly techniques of modern furniture. Each piece of furniture will be finished with wax, oil, rubber varnish, lacquer or water-based varnish, so participants will learn wood finishes. The idea is to complete the beginner's training first as it is essential to understand the trade of the carpenter and cabinetmaker before making furniture at professional and artistic level, or as a designer.

Once the first two years have been completed (the minimum recommended), it will be possible for students to start making their own designs. In this third course, the topics covered are materials, function and form, colours and finishes, and working methods. There will be site visits to suppliers of wood, trade events and furniture fairs.
