A ceramic capturing of poise
- Kaibo creates sculptures with a serene, unadorned aesthetic
- His inspiration comes from ancient Chinese bronze and ceramic vessels
- He is professor and Acting Vice Dean at China Academy of Art, and an IAC member
Kaibo Xiong's artworks are rooted in the ceramic heritage of Song Dynasty Ru and Jun wares. Kaibo spent 12 rigorous years studying at CAA and Qinghua University to develop and perfect his approach to craftsmanship, which now bridges ancestral wisdom with contemporary ceramic sculpture. "I am guided by my ethos to transcend tradition through creation,” he says. "It means I integrate raw clay, rich firing glazes and mixed materials into my making." Moving beyond functional constraints, Kaibo captures the tranquil and unadorned spirit of ancient bronzework and pottery in sculptures with great energy. His award-winning work is held by the National Art Museum of China and Tokyo University of the Arts.

INTERVIEW
My inspiration stems from traditional culture that I am passionate about, as well as from the quiet simplicity of daily life.
Before I get started on a work, I ask these three questions: Does the piece hold artistic charm? Does it possess visual harmony? And, do I genuinely love it from my heart? These answers guide everything I choose to create.
In Chinese, the word order of gong-yi, craft-art, puts skill first, which is right for a practice that is about making functional objects. How wonderful that yi-shu, art-skill, puts art first! It proves that technique exists to serve ideas and bring aesthetic vision to life.
Innovation comes from tradition, not from rejecting it. I believe only rooted art endures. We must step into our heritage for nourishment, then step out with modern vision to redefine ceramic art for our time. Study, research, re-learn. Embrace the past to shape the present.
