Woven traditions reimagined
- Erico expresses his creativity through large-scale woven sculptures and decorative objects
- His Brazilian roots sparked a deep appreciation for traditional and cultural heritage linked to craft
- His creations are often made from different materials such as wood, straw and polyester
Erico reconnected with his Brazilian origins while studying product design at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Kingston University in London, where he discovered an interest in craft. “I studied Brazilian manual straw weaving techniques and researched its biomimicry properties for a project,” he says. Later, Erico reimagined weaving by playing with scale, proportions and materials. Moving beyond straw, he experimented with synthetic ribbons, felt, plastic and metal. Back in Brazil, Erico opened his workshop to create signature pieces, some of which in collaboration with local weaving communities. His creative language magnifies traditional weaving techniques in original ways, enabling traditional Brazilian craft to be celebrated within contemporary design settings.

INTERVIEW
Much of my inspiration comes from nature, but above all, from Brazilian culture, folklore, folk art and traditional craft practices. I am particularly drawn to handmade weavings and manual processes that explore three-dimensionality, modularity and the profusion of elements.
My work moves between three creative realms I once rejected. Being a craftsperson in Brazil is still undervalued so I first focused on design. Over time, I accepted that I am a craftsperson, a designer and an artist, that the combination of these different forms of knowledge makes my work unique.
Brazil is culturally shaped by a blend of Indigenous, African and European influences offering a wide range of expressions that form the foundation of my creativity. Straw has always been a central element of my creative research. Weaving allows me to stay close to the traditions of Indigenous basketry and ancestral techniques.
Understanding and giving value to our origins and ancestry is key to making pieces with a strong sense of identity. I encourage deep research and experimentation, always seeking innovative processes that are mindful of society and the environment.
