Kinetic rings and sculpted gemstones

  • Claudio's rings are characterised by movement and shifting qualities
  • He pays equal attention to visible and hidden elements without sacrificing wearability
  • His pieces have featured in films such as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Dark Tower

Based in Montreal, Claudio Pino is a jewellery maker who specialises in creating unique sculptural rings. Fascinated by his father’s ring collection from an early age, he decided to pursue formal studies in jewellery. "I dedicated several years to studio research because I wanted to develop a signature aesthetic," Claudio explains. His body of work is defined by mechanical complexity, historical references and a sustained interest in science fiction. Claudio controls the entire creative process, from concept and design to cutting, faceting and setting gemstones. His rings are often kinetic, featuring moving engineered structures and carefully selected stones. He often works in collaboration with his clients to create bespoke creations.

Claudio Pino is a master artisan: he began his career in 1995 and he started teaching in 2003.

INTERVIEW

I left Chile in 1987. When I arrived in Canada, I worked to support myself while learning French by listening to radio broadcasts. My interest in art developed in high school while studying painting, inspired by my father, who was a plumber and a self-taught wood sculptor.

Although I started as a painter, I was always drawn to jewellery and gemstones through my father's collection. A friend told me about a jewellery school in Montreal. I enrolled the next day and trained intensively for three years. Later, I pursed my studies in jewellery design at the Holts Academy of Jewelry in London and in gemstone facetting in California.

After graduating, I spent several years conducting studio research rather than launching into production immediately. To build a recognisable artistic signature, I focused on expanding my understanding of the history of jewellery, exploring my connection with nature, and pursuing my growing interest in science fiction.

Each piece I create unique. I design rings as complete sculptures, including the parts that are hidden from view. I work with movement, structure and stones. My goal is to create pieces that are both technically complex and physically wearable while maintaining a distinct identity.
