Material conversations in metal

  • Margo creates their own enamel mixtures for custom metalwork and jewellery
  • Their works are rooted deeply in the environment
  • Their metal objects are often mistaken for ceramic creations

A drive for challenge and discovery drew Margo Misiak-Orlovic to work with metal and jewellery. Having previously worked with sculpture and glass, they obtained an MA in jewellery and metal from the Royal College of Art in London in 2024, embarking on their career as an artisan. Margo is an experimenter and explorer at heart. "I prefer to reinterpret traditional techniques and materials in subversive and innovative ways," they say. "Conceptuality is central to my practice. The why always precedes the how." Margo's objects explore possibilities for inclusive, just and respectful existence in the world for all material creatures and creations. They are a member of the Guild of Enamellers, the London Creative Network and the Association for Contemporary Jewellery.

Margo Misiak-Orlovic is a rising star: they began their career in 2019 and they started teaching in 2024.

INTERVIEW

I draw inspiration from the materiality of my surroundings, discovering unexpected connections between different contrasting elements. The boundary-defying qualities of urban-natural liminal environments also influence my work.

I capture sounds from the environment through field recordings and digitally compose them into complex soundscapes. By integrating audio directly into sculptural pieces, I transform the objects into physical speakers, creating immersive, multisensory experiences.

I apply experimental enamel surfaces to hand formed and electroformed metal. I create my own enamel mixtures and fusing them using torch-firing techniques, I create distinctive, one-of-a-kind material finishes.

People are often surprised to discover my pieces are crafted from metal rather than ceramic, and are amazed by their lightness. They are excited to learn the conceptual narrative behind the forms, which allows them to connect more deeply with the work.
