Jewellery maker | Bucharest, Romania

Preciously complex and meaningful

  • Miruna opened her jewellery making studio in 2018
  • The fusion between a jewel and its wearer fascinates her
  • She is passionate about experimenting with techniques and materials

After many years in the corporate world, Miruna Belicovici became a goldsmith just before the age of 40. “Although I had an extensive legal and business management background, I have always felt attracted to the creative industries. Therefore, changing careers appeared as a natural next step in my becoming,” she states. It all started with the desire to translate her thoughts into a piece of jewellery designed for herself, which later led her to attend a specialised school. In her work, Miruna uses traditional techniques, as well as unconventional approaches in designing and manufacturing contemporary pieces. She enjoys exploring the immense creative possibilities, the rigour and the preciousness of jewellery making, often creating mixed media art objects that ingeniously combine precious metals with alternative materials.

What are your sources of inspiration?
I believe that my inspiration comes from the hidden inner form of things. Jewellery making calls me to unravel a tale hidden deep in metal and transform it into an object that fully satisfies the senses: complex to discover in its details, pleasing to wear and meaningful in its concept.
Do you master any specific techniques?
I may be proficient in traditional jewellery techniques, such as wax sculpting, stone setting or other similar techniques, but the truth is the more I know the less I feel it will ever be enough. Also, working with alternative materials (wool, paper, textile, pigments, plastic) is a very rewarding process for me, as creativity knows no bounds than those you set yourself.
How do you express tradition and innovation in your work?
Mostly by meaning and contrast. Creating a perfectly built structure and challenging it with the rough beauty of some well-chosen accents fascinates me. I find mixing copper and gold, perfectly polished surfaces with raw stones, or flawless cut diamonds embedded in rough organic textures truly addictive and aesthetically rewarding. In these works, I try to capture the subtle flavour of imperfection and impermanence.
How would you define your craft and what do you love about it?
A drop of magic in a sea of relentless work, perseverance and almost addictive curiosity towards all the beauty and wonders of life. I love the meaningful connections, the personal encounters, and the wearers of my creations. The fact that people entrust me with their desires and feelings to shape a jewel that reflects their individuality honours me.
