Jewellery maker

Contemporary jewellery with a twist

  • Marc fuses modern metals with traditional gems
  • Innovation plays a big part in his designs
  • His craft has culminated in prestigious awards

It did not take much convincing for Marc Lange to choose a career in goldsmithing, since he was lured by the techniques, the beautiful materials and the creativity involved, whilst attending the Vocational School of Goldsmiths in Amsterdam. Specialising in the combination of modern materials such as titanium and black zirconium with traditional precious metals, like yellow, red and white gold and platinum. Marc implements techniques that he learned during his training, such as sawing, milling, forging, soldering, drilling, and polishing – but he also uses innovative techniques that bring a contemporary dimension to his production. For Marc, a piece is well made when it is technically and aesthetically correct, but also when it is comfortable to wear.

What was the first piece you made?
I find it difficult to determine what my first serious piece was. I still have designs in my collection dating back to 1992. The first important masterpiece I made was a silver teapot that won me the first prize in 1995 on the theme of Cubism.
How do you express tradition and innovation in your work?
In all kinds of ways. The most striking innovation is the 3D drawing technique with which I develop a form of language that was impossible before. With my jewellery collection, Silhouette Fireworks, I had silhouettes stretched so that it looked like fireworks spouting into the air.
What do you love most about your profession?
When I surprise myself with my own creativity. Also, when what I have made for people something that adds emotional value for them. Clients regularly shed a tear at the sales table, people are so grateful: it gives me great satisfaction when my work means so much to people.
When is a memorable moment from your career?
It was when I first won the national design competition for goldsmiths and jewellers back in 2007, which afforded me great recognition. I made it to the final five times and in 2015 I won the prestigious prize for the second time.
