Picea Totem

This totem by Basse Stittgen was crafted using cellulose from end-of-life paper, and lignin, a natural binder typically discarded during paper production. The materials were transformed into a clay-like substance, applied to a wooden frame, and left to airdry. The bark-like surface was achieved using silicone casts of fallen trees. Reversing the conventional paper-making process, the work reunites the two principal components of wood to create a new biodegradable material that retains traces of the tree from which it originated.
