Pottery wheel masterclass near Kyoto

with Hosai Matsubayashi

Learn the art of slab building

This is a special occasion to create your one-of-a-kind Asahiyaki tea bowl with an Asahiyaki artisan. In this workshop, participants will use clay from Uji to learn slab building techniques and learn how to control clay on a potter’s wheel. The clay from Uji has a slightly rough texture that is soft to the touch. An artisan will glaze your piece afterwards, using a transparent glaze that creates a unique dappled pattern known as Hanshi, with a warm pink colour, characteristic of Asahiyaki. The piece will be fired and shipped to your address, arriving within two months.
