Creating wearable art installations

  • Raluca has 20 years experience as a ceramicist
  • She designs original jewellery using ceramics
  • She focuses on technique, concept and aesthetics

Born in Romania and currently living in Tortosa, Spain, Raluca Buzura creates ceramic jewellery pieces that can be considered true works of art. The objects she makes have their roots in her college years, when she liked to create art installations in ceramics, before translating her creative ideas and vision into jewellery design. Today, her collections express the artistic maturity reached after 20 years of experience. After studying ceramics in high school, Raluca attended the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and opened a studio after obtaining her master’s degree, in 2009. Since then, she has participated in numerous projects and exhibitions and has received various awards at jewellery fairs in Europe.

Did you learn from a master?
During my studies, there were always prominent figures who taught and guided me, but concerning my development as a jewellery maker, I was rather self-taught. As long as there is a knowledge base, I consider that experimenting on your own is the best teacher.
How would you describe your development process?
It was a long journey of research and experimentation until I was able to define my own style. This involved self-analysis and self-knowledge, an aspect you can only achieve with time and patience, to the point where the creation identifies with what you think, feel or live.
Do you master any specific techniques?
The technology of ceramics is a very complex one and the ways to work with porcelain are numerous. Besides the techniques already known, I always like to test its possibilities and push its limitations, obtaining new results that do not necessarily have a name, but which I call successful experiments that can be repeated.
How would you define your jewellery?
I like to call my creations wearable art installations. My artistic path was born from the desire to combine design, ceramics and art installation into a single type of creation. I realised at college that my mind, heart and hands were longing to create unique objects in ceramics.
