The Real Fábrica de Tapices is the oldest royal manufacturer in continuous operation since 1721. It plays an essential role in safeguarding Spain's textile heritage, preserving the traditional craftsmanship and manufacturing processes of tapestries, carpets and reposteros with materials of the highest quality. The Real Fábrica de Tapices is currently a leader in textile restoration in Spain, using the most advanced technologies. In 1996, it became a private foundation, supported by a board of five public administration bodies (National Heritage, Ministry of Culture, Community of Madrid, Madrid City Council and Ministry of Finance) and several individual trustees. Throughout its existence, it has been directed by famous figures such as Bayeu, Sabatini and Mengs, among others.
In addition to its textile creation and restoration, the Real Fábrica de Tapices organises guided tours to its historic workshop, where the public can see its craftsmanship in action. The manufacturer has a museum gallery with tapestries from the Raphael series, cartoons by Goya and old production tools. It regularly collaborates with other institutions to hold exhibitions and showcase emerging artists and artisans.
