Johanna Nestor

Stove maker

Bringing nature inside the home

  • Johanna makes traditional tiled stoves with a contemporary feel
  • In 2017 she was selected as one of Sweden’s best young designers
  • Her tiles take inspiration from the structures and patterns of nature

Johanna Nestor is a young artisan who designs and makes contemporary ceramic tiled stoves using traditional techniques. She studied at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in ceramics and glass in 2016. “Tiled stoves have a long tradition in Sweden, although most are mass-produced in factories,” she says. “So the idea of making ceramic tiled stoves came quite naturally to me. I've always loved the rustic and genuine feeling of old houses and traditional objects. Since tiled stoves are made out of ceramics, one day I thought I could possibly make a stove myself... that’s how it all started.”

How did your business begin?
I started by restoring old stoves. That’s how I fell in love with the craft and its specialised techniques. After learning how to restore tiles I learned how to make new ones, and I started working with several different prototypes.
How does what you do combine tradition and innovation?
My work revolves around the ceramic tiled stove as an alternative efficient source of heat, but my main focus is on developing the design of the stove from what it has looked like historically, to give it a contemporary look.
What do you enjoy most about your life as an artisan?
When I’m working with my material I’m challenged and at the same time I feel confident, relaxed and happy. I also enjoy the complexity of combining long-established techniques with my personal artistry. For me it’s artisanship at its best.
What’s surprising about what you do?
People often find it interesting that I actually do all the steps myself, from drawing to constructing all the pieces separately, tile by tile, and completely by hand. People are also surprised how energy-efficient the stoves are as a source of heat.
