Majestic forms of weathering
- Zechao creates abstract ceramic sculptures that speak of erosion and depth
- His specialism is in layering slip peel on unglazed clay
- For him, craft is an expressive and charming medium for self-expression
Zechao Han creates abstract, geometric ceramic sculptures characterised by a richly eroded appearance with peeling surfaces. "I have always had a fascination for weathered, rusted textures," he says. In keeping with a movement towards unglazed ceramics in contemporary art, Zechao is researching multi-layer slip peeling, using this method to sculpt textures from within and convey a raw natural essence. His work has been selected for major international exhibitions, including the 13th Mino International Ceramics Competition, Jingdezhen Biennale and Homo Faber. Beyond his studio practice, Zechao actively engages in craft development projects alongside an MFA in Ceramic Art Design at the China Academy of Art.

INTERVIEW
As the use of slip grows popular in ceramics, I explore multi-layer slip peeling. Layering and processing single-medium clay, I build deep colours, textures and spatial depth. It foregrounds process traces and material truths, which I believe responds to the core concerns of contemporary art.
Raised in China, I grew up with aesthetics of harmony and timeless depth. Drawn to weathered textures, my Red Cliff series, inspired by Liangzhu jade axes, seeks to express insights from my culture, in majestic forms and rich layers of history.
To balance the energy consumed during firing, I collect reclaimed clay scraps from friends and foraged wild clays for slip. Combining waste with natural elements means I can avoid using refined materials.
Sustain creative passion, relentlessly test materials, and open yourself to every possibility that can be woven into your practice. I would also advise to trust in simplicity: even the most modest beginning can gather great power.
