Sophie Luline

Ceramicist | Sainte-Hélène-du-Lac, France

A celebration of the creative gesture

  • Sophie sees her work as a dialogue between nature and humanity
  • The first objects she made were pots for her bonsai trees
  • As a child, she was already shaping small clay figurines and drawing a lot

Sophie Luline is a passionate ceramicist. She discovered the art of ceramics at the age of 25 during evening classes at the Beaux-Arts of Tarbes, where she also trained in sculpture. She worked as an assistant to architects for 18 years after studying law. Then, in 2011, she decided to change paths and opened her workshop in Savoie. In her journey up to this point, Sophie trained with potters and experimented with porcelain and high-temperature firing. Her work is inspired by both nature and the aquatic world. She notably developed a unique technique combining knitting and porcelain to create light fixtures, an innovation that was awarded a prize. Sophie's creations, made from materials like porcelain and stoneware, evoke the earth, water, and an intimate connection with nature. Passionate about passing on her knowledge, Sophie regularly works with schools and associations to introduce young people to clay modelling, which she considers essential in an increasingly digital world.

What attracted you to the profession of ceramicist?
This craft allows me to feel fulfilled as it engages both the intelligence of the hand and of the heart. The manual work on the material, its transformation by firing, the creativity and innovation involved, all reflect my true nature.
How would you describe the essence of your artistic work?
My creations, made of earth, water and fire, speak of our relationship with nature—of a rediscovered connection, an intimacy we should never have lost. I present my vision, rooted in figuration and yet so dreamlike, as if there were no boundary between the real and the imaginary.
What techniques and skills do you master?
I work with porcelain and stoneware and create my own high-temperature glazes. I offer unique pieces, sculptures and wall pieces inspired by nature, as well as lighting fixtures inspired by the bio-luminescent creatures of the deep sea.
What aspect of your profession excites you the most?
I would say 'the gesture.' My work celebrates nature and humanity. For this, I use as few artifices as possible, with the fewest tools possible. Because, for me, what matters is the dialogue between the hand and the material—the intelligence of the hand, the communion of the hand and the material.
