Laurette Broll

Ceramicist

A table of serene curves and muted rainbows

  • Laurette creates ceramics for use in everyday life
  • Her love of cooking and colour guide her work
  • She is proud to use local, natural materials

Laurette Broll creates contemporary ceramic tableware from her workshop in the heart of Paris. After completing her studies at the National School of Applied Arts (ENSAAMA) in France, Laurette apprenticed in design and worked with various art mediums and artisans, including during a 6-month stint in Asia, before opening her own ceramics workshop. While her style often references the peaceful curves, muted colours and rich textures of Japanese design, Laurette’s work is decidedly local. She sources her materials from within France and collaborates with local artists such as chefs, illustrators, candlemakers and jewellery designers. Conscientious about her environmental impact, Laurette also makes an art of recycling her glaze.

What motivated you to choose ceramics as your medium?
I was struck by the versatility of clay, the possibility of creating new and modern forms from a natural substance, and the exciting range of colours. I have always loved cooking and art de la table, so creating ceramic tableware brings my passions together.
What objects do you create and for whom?
I focus on ceramic dishware and table décor. I design my own pieces, which are available in my workshop boutique, and I also collaborate with restaurant chefs, culinary stylists for cookbooks and magazines, as well as individual clients, to create made-to-order pieces.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Two inspirations are my collaborations with other artisans and minimising waste. For instance, my Kintsugi collection was created with artisan Béatrice Jacotot, who applies a Japanese technique to turn dishes that have broken in my kiln into masterpieces.
How do you share your skills and expertise?
I offer evening and weekend classes for students of all levels—some of whom have continued honing their talents in my workshop over several years. I also regularly train apprentices, including one this year thanks to a grant from the City of Paris.
