A harmony in improbable clay forms
- Sandra's pieces are inspired by nature and geology
- She creates organic forms with the coil building technique
- She is completely self-taught in her practice
Born in Sweden and based in France, Sandra Munier developed an instinctive sculptural language through relentless experimentation with clay. She creates sculptural vessels and large-scale wall installations in stoneware and porcelain, working primarily with the ancient technique of coil building. Sandra's artworks appear to defy gravity while bringing a quiet sense of wonder to the spaces they inhabit. She explores the delicate balance between stability and collapse. "I am inspired by improbable forms shaped by geological time, as well as by caves, rock formations and the slow forces of erosion," she says. Whether a vessel or a site-specific commission, each piece is built by hand without sketches, guided instead by a 3D image formed in Sandra's mind and refined through the making process. Her work invites the viewer to pause and discover harmony at the edge of chaos.

INTERVIEW
I discovered clay after moving to France. The moment I touched it, I knew it was what I wanted to do. I ordered 100 kilograms of clay and began experimenting at home.
I never draw my pieces before I begin. I build the sculpture in my mind first, then begin working with coils. As the piece grows, it starts taking the shape of what I initially imagined it to be.
Nature is my biggest source of inspiration, especially geological formations that take centuries to emerge. I want my work to create the same sense of wonder I feel when I encounter unexpected shapes in nature.
Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Ignore the idea that some things are impossible to achieve. I wanted to discover the limits of clay myself, which is how I developed my own way of working.
