The tailors of music
- Salvatore and Pasquale uphold the Neapolitan tradition of lutherie
- Their experimental vision makes their input highly valuable to musicians today
- They add decorative touches with inlay and woodcarving
Salvatore and Pasquale Mancino founded their lutherie workshop in the early 2000s, as a testament to their passion for the art of lutherie. The Mancino brothers design, build and restore plucked and bowed instruments, such as violins, violas, cellos, mandolins, mandocellos, lutes and classical, acoustic and electric guitars, as well as bows. Every piece they craft is unique, and carries forward the great tradition of Neapolitan lutherie without giving up on experimentation. "We combine the sweetness of the Neapolitan sound with the power of a more incisive tone that meets the needs of contemporary musicians," says Salvatore. "We are lucky to do something we deeply love every single day. We approach our craft like children at play," adds Pasquale.

INTERVIEW
Pasquale: Our roots are in craftsmanship, as our father was a furniture restorer and cabinetmaker, and we grew up surrounded by wood, developing both knowledge and passion. Salvatore specialised in carving and inlay, then we both took a professional lutherie course and immediately opened our workshop. Salvatore also graduated in Fine Arts, in sculpture and restoration. We later earned a second diploma at a lutherie high school, where we now teach.
Pasquale: Our main inspiration is 18th-century Naples, not just lutherie, but all the art and history of the period. We look to the great Italian tradition of instrument making, luthiers such as Cesare Candi in Genoa, Luigi Embergher in Rome, and the Vinaccia family in Naples. But we also draw from sculpture, including Bernini and Neapolitan statuary. We go to study works in person in our city's churches, sometimes spending hours in front of one figure. Mythology is another source of inspiration. Living in Naples is a true privilege for all these reasons.
Salvatore: We always start from considering the past, first absorbing what came before us, and then moving forward with awareness. Experimentation is equally important, and we build prototypes to test new forms and materials. Dialogue with musicians is essential, too. Baroque musicians have strict philological demands, but an open-minded musician understands that recreating the exact sound of the 17th century is impossible, so together we mediate. Instruments themselves have changed over centuries, the idea that there has been no evolution is simply false.
Salvatore: A luthier is a highly sought-after figure among musicians who pursue quality, as we are able to create an instrument built to measure, shaped around their body, their hands, to achieve their own sound. Our clients are mainly professional musicians, such as soloists, conservatory professors, or established teachers. Over time, students will come to see us, too, as they grow and feel the need for a handcrafted, bespoke instrument.
