Materials to materialise ideas

  • Katerina uses modern and archival materials
  • She makes embroidery sets
  • She combines various techniques

Katerina Moroz has been in the textile industry for ten years. She used to manage an atelier, where they experimented a lot with garment decoration. At some point, she realised embroidery has become her main tool of artistic expression. Since 2016, she has been focusing on embroidery. She gives special attention to materials, she picks them based on how they blend with the rest of the elements to create the perfect texture. Katerina enjoys designing unique fittings, like embossed porcelain sequins, and loves to dye and shape textile. She also integrates archival beads, ribbons, and cords in her pieces. She used to do workshops, and now she has big mutual projects with some of her former students. They are currently working on Flora’s dress from Botticelli’s painting.

Where did you learn embroidery?
I took courses at Embcentre in Yaroslavl, I learned ancient Russian techniques from Tatiana Valkova at the Russian Origins Centre. Also, I would like to mention Italian master Luca Tripaldi – I learned how to work with porcelain from him.
What is special about your technique?
I use various embroidery techniques and I combine them boldly. Embroidery is such an expansive craft, it’s hard to tell where it ends and weaving or lace-making begins. I don’t limit myself when it comes to techniques. I choose the ones that can fully reveal my idea.
What inspires you?
I am fascinated by the detailed structure of plants. I instantly start thinking of ways to convey a sense of those lines and forms with textile materials. Subtle and complex images described by authors in literature. I am also inspired by trawling through archives, fabrics, art and flea markets.
Can you share a memorable work moment?
Working on my Acqua Alta diptych while I was in Venice was very special: the project was dedicated to Venice actually. I will never forget the joy I felt when crossing the Grand Canal after I bought a piece of cloth for the diptych at the Rubelli store.
Katerina Moroz is a rising star: she began her career in 2017 and she started teaching in 2018
