What initially drew you to ceramics as an art form?
I have always been fascinated by the tactile nature of clay. Its malleability allows me to express emotions and ideas through texture and form. Growing up in Korea, I was exposed to traditional ceramics, and over time, I realised how I could infuse modern concepts into this ancient medium to create something unique.
How do you approach the process of creating a new piece?
I start with a concept and experiment with forms. I sketch and experiment before I even touch the clay. Once I begin shaping the piece, the clay almost takes on a life of its own, guiding the process. I let the material and my intuition inform the final outcome.
What inspired the themes of home and family in your work?
Home and family are universal themes that resonate deeply with me. Ceramics, with its mix of function and art, allows me to explore emotions like nostalgia, stability and fragility within the context of personal connections.
How do you blend traditional ceramics with modern art?
I respect Korean traditions while pushing boundaries, by integrating modern methods and ideas. My goal is to honour the past and create work that speaks to both history and contemporary life, blending heritage with innovation.
