Strengthening bonds with clay

  • Daniélle and Rodrigo named their studio after a mythical fire serpent that guards the Amazon
  • Nature and architecture are among their greatest sources of inspiration
  • In their work they aim to bring essential creations to the world, with minimal impact

Daniélle Carazzai and Rodrigo Ramirez founded their studio in 2014, with a passion for the art of ceramics and a commitment to protecting the environment. Ceramics first came across their path at an Eva Díaz Torres exhibition, focusing on Raku firing. This was not the couple's first encounter with art, but it was one of the most impactful. A few years later, Daniélle immersed herself in theoretical and practical studies in ceramics, leading her to open up Estudio Boitatá on her own. Rodrigo joined her in 2016 after finishing his training in painting, effervescent about the creative process that emerged around him and Daniélle with ceramics.

How did ceramics become part of your life?
There was a definitive moment when we made the decision to walk together professionally in the art of ceramics. The challenge, at first, was to reconcile three aspects of work: writing, photography and ceramics. And that came about with a lot of dedication, luck and daring.
What have ceramics added to your relationship?
For the first time, we shared not only an address but also a workspace. The bond with clay and with natural cycles have brought us a greater understanding of ourselves and of the simplicity of life. Ceramics reconnected us to the essential.
What do you love most about this profession?
Clay is alive, it has its desires of its own and it cannot be easily controlled. This, in itself, is already a great lesson in resilience and in life. Knowing that our hands join so many others that came before is what makes us work to create pieces that speak beyond our time.
What is your biggest source of inspiration?
Nature and architecture are among our greatest sources of inspiration. But anything can be a spark, from a poem to a childhood memory. What we are looking for is a form of expression that, in some way, offers a momentary pause, or has a dialogue with silence.
