Anne Wenzel is dedicated to adding life and movement to glass, a craft that initially presented itself as rather static. Using engraving and sandblasting together, she creates fixed designs that change perspective as the piece rotates. Anne is inspired by language, German idioms, wordplay and fairy tales. Her work often carries subtle humour or a quietly unsettling edge. “Ideas that make me smile, often with a little ironic twist, have the best chance of becoming real,” she says. Through changing zeitgeist, countless exhibitions and encounters with clients and colleagues, Anne Wenzel has kept her focus on narrative, experimentation and human connection.

INTERVIEW
Growing up in Germany in the 1960s, I did not watch television. The books I read were mostly text, which forced me to come up with my own images. Whether it was Grimm’s fairy tales, Max and Moritz, or Andersen, these stories were not always gentle. I believe that early training of the imagination still guides how I develop ideas and create new work today.
I usually spend my mornings in my workshop, focused on hands-on glasswork. In the afternoons, I go to my shop in Flensburg's old town, which I have shared for over 40 years with a glassblower colleague. I also enjoy welcoming guests to the workshop for special events, such as the European Days of Crafts.
Though my training encouraged experimentation, many of my techniques came later. I have always let curiosity lead the way. Sandblasting, for instance, only became central to my work over time. It takes me nearly a decade to fully integrate a technique into my practice.
Community has always been central. From the early days of Studio Glass in Germany through today, I have participated in various associations and networks. I enjoy exchanging ideas, seeing work through different perspectives and passing on skills to the next generation.
