Renzo Toso Fei

Glass engraver

In praise of beauty

  • When he was 13, Renzo started working in the family business
  • His considers himself lucky because he grew up around beauty
  • For many years, 'Fei' has been his family's nickname

Renzo Toso Fei's family has been living in Murano since 1300, and has always been dedicated to the art of glass. Born into art – his father was a glass engraver – Renzo decided to continue in the family business. He has worked alongside his parents for 30 years and, in the future, his youngest son, Tobia, is likely to join them. Renzo loves tradition and rarely departs from it, except on request. He is often asked to create products such as mirrors and glass interiors for world-renowned architects. He considers himself “halfway between art and crafts”, but feels more an artisan than an artist. He cherishes the fact that each day is different, and he loves to get up every morning and decide what to do.

Where do you find inspiration?
I have always breathed glass: in my home, there are items from 1400. But beauty in many forms inspires me. One time I was in a private 'palazzo'; I took the wrong staircase and found myself in a room where there were some Canova statues. Their beauty took my breath away.
How did you train as a glassmaker?
I started in 1983 when I joined the family business run by my father and mother, who made engravings and glass objects. We've worked together for more than 30 years. My mother is now 78 years old and, unfortunately for her, she is still helping me!
Your family has illustrious connections...
My grandfather founded the famous Venini factory with lawyer Paolo Venini in 1929; they were partners. My father’s name is Paolo because he was baptised by Paolo Venini. In the family there is also Alberto Toso Fei, my cousin, who is a famous writer.
What advice would you give to young glassmakers?
My son Tobia is at the glass school in Murano, but I don’t want to force him to do it. My eldest son, Barnaba, is studying environmental science. I always say to young people that so many activities of the past can bring great satisfaction.
