Expressive assemblages of nature
- Lu creatively combines heritage crafts into botanical mixed media works
- Before pursuing installation art, she studied illustration
- She honours nature's cycle, borrowing its materials and giving them back
Lu Huang creates mixed media installations with the environment at the heart of her practice. "I embrace an unbounded artistic philosophy," she says. Lu uses floral art as a medium to craft large-scale immersive works, deconstructing and reassembling dynamic materials such as bamboo, straw, preserved flowers and upcycled items. She works with heritage crafts, such as tongcaohua sola flowers, which are delicate artificial flowers crafted from rice paper plant. Her mixed media botanicals are infused with emotion, architectural presence and vitality. Through contemporary expression, Lu continually advocates for environmental protection.

INTERVIEW
Since its establishment in 2018, my studio's practice has been devoted to research. My work intricately weaves together themes of botanicals, the earth's natural essence and historical heritage of Chinese culture. Today, I work across multiple materials and techniques to create my installations.
My contemporary installations have the soul of traditional craftsmanship: I am the bridge between the two. I strip away classic forms to build modern visual systems. By integrating Chinese herbs, velvet flowers and handmade paper into everyday objects, I express a poetic life where all elements interweave.
Creating is often a deeply personal, introspective journey. Engaging with students provides invaluable fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. Teaching compels me to approach my work with rigour and deep respect.
My work focuses on nature, plants and earth culture, inherently linking it to ecological principles. My process is circular: materials are carefully sourced from the natural world, utilised for humanity and respectfully returned to their origin, completing an ecological loop.
