Hicham Aguedach

Jewellery maker

Casablanca, Morocco

A Moroccan dream of diamonds and gold

  • Hicham’s jewellery is influenced by nature, geometry and Moroccan traditions
  • To him, a well-made piece is defined by an original concept executed with perfection
  • He is a professor at the Academy of Traditional Crafts, the institution where he once studied

Hicham Aguedach’s creative journey began in childhood, sparked by the rich visual heritage of traditional Moroccan kaftans and jewellery. In 2013, he began his studies at the Academy of Traditional Crafts, while gaining hands-on experience through internships and apprenticeships. Guided by his art history professor's mentorship, Hicham learned to anchor every project in deep historical research, before transitioning into professional jewellery making in 2016. His pieces feature traditional ajourage openwork and latticework, with diamonds inset into intricately cut gold, inspired by the geometry of Islamic art and Moroccan zellige tiles. “Turning gems into wearable jewellery is a dream come true,” he says. After developing his design process under the mentorship of Nathalie Sokierka, Hicham returned to the academy as its first ever professor of jewellery design drawing.

Hicham Aguedach is a master artisan: he began his career in 2016 and he started teaching in 2017.

INTERVIEW

I work with a large number of traditional jewellery-making techniques, including modelling, chiselling, stone setting, soldering, filing and polishing. I also specialise in the ajourage technique of latticework and openwork. It is a skilful decorative technique that allows light to pierce through to the gem.

The very first piece I made when I joined the Academy of Traditional Crafts in Casablanca was a brooch inspired by leaves.

As a professor at the Academy of Traditional Crafts, I am committed to extending apprenticeship and internship opportunities in workshops, jewellery brands and companies to my students. Through my work in the academy and across different vocational education institutes, I strive to foster these connections.

My best advice is: you need to love the design and creation process, and be deeply passionate about the craft.
