Beej; From The Shore

These sculptures by Reha Salvi were turned from single blocks of teak and neem wood and hand carved on a lathe. The surfaces were finished through controlled charring, ebonising, natural oils and buffing, while carefully thinned walls and hand drilled perforations allow light to pass gently through the forms. Beej, meaning 'seed' in Hindi, takes the seed pod as both form and metaphor, reflecting the protective geometry found in nature. From the Shore draws its appearance from the exoskeletons of the sea urchins collected by the artist along the Chennai coast, which glow like lanterns when held to the light.
