This vase by Kosuke Kaneshige was wheel thrown using the traditional techniques of Japanese Bizen ware, and fired in a climbing kiln. Left unglazed, the iron-rich clay developed its distinctive colours and textures naturally during firing. Rooted in a ceramic tradition dating back over 900 years, the work celebrates the intrinsic beauty of Bizen clay. Rather than relying on glaze, it allows the unpredictable effects of flame and ash to reveal the material’s natural character.
