Linen, Sweetgrass
This sculpture by Debora Muhl was hand coiled from sweetgrass gathered by Indigenous harvesters in North America, and stitched with waxed linen thread. By dividing and reversing the coils, the artist created a unique sculptural form. Pushing the boundaries of traditional basketry, the work reflects an intuitive and slow process of shaping fibre by hand, embracing the possibilities of coiling beyond utility.
