Esparto grass, Palm
This sculpture by Alba F Castro was crafted using empreita de pico, a pointed braid technique traditional to both Portugal and Galicia. Palm fibre was woven over an esparto base and sewn following the construction methods of the Galician Sancosmeiro hat. Inspired by the fabric rings used by women in the Algarve to carry heavy loads on their heads, the work reflects on women’s strength, and the visible and invisible burdens they bear.
