This sculpture by Christian Burchard was carved from freshly cut blocks of madrone wood. After shaping, the forms were heated and wedged open to create pages, allowing the material to deform unpredictably as it dried. Resembling weathered books, the piece reflects on histories, beliefs and ancestral knowledge carried through words, while evoking voices silenced through indifference, intolerance and misuse.
