Renzo Buttazzo is the Master of Pietra Leccese, an opal-colored limestone which is the absolute protagonist of the countless baroque masterpieces of the Salento region. Buttazzo’s smooth and soft contemporary sculptures express the shapes of nature blending poetry and design, and represent a proper revolution in the way lecce stone has been worked for centuries. A guided tour to his workshop is the quickest way to understand where this revolution lies, offering an overview on the traditional manual workmanship handed-down from the stone-cutters of the past and an introduction to Buttazzo’s own experimentations and techniques.
