In this 2-day workshop with luthier Jonathan Hill, participants will learn the basics of fret sawn marquetry. As an introduction, they will discuss together the different types of marquetry and Jonathan will describe the process of selecting veneers for best visual effect. Students will each saw their own packet of veneers by hand, made up of three contrasting woods, and assemble them to make three design panels. Individual pieces will then be sand shaded to enhance the depth of the design before being finished with oil or shellac. The design will follow historical examples from 17th century furniture. This workshop costs 220 GBP per person and lasts 8 hours per day for 2 days.
