A 1-day introductory course to natural dyeing

In this workshop led by Katharine Gorham, you will learn the essentials of transferring natural colours found in plants onto fabric and yarn. Katharine will guide you through the fundamental aspects of natural dyeing, fibre preparation and mordanting. You will learn the various steps involved in preparing a natural dyebath, as well as the technique of over-dyeing to create complex tones. You will compile a personal sketchbook to record dye experiments and practical tips for working with natural materials. Finally, you will work with different materials, such as cotton, silk or wool, experimenting with painted mordants to discover how to achieve vastly different colours from a single dye pot.
