Artisan Christiana Vardakou presents a collective workshop to explore the traditional wax-resist dyeing technique of Batik. Participants will draw on cotton fabric using a small copper tool called tjanting that holds melted, dye-resistant wax. They will then choose from three natural dye baths to bring their creations to life with plant-based colours. Participants will learn how to apply and layer wax, prepare natural dye baths, understand the fibre choices and mordanting, as well as remove the wax after the dye. Everyone will create 2 small batik pieces and one hand-dyed cotton tote bag with their own designs. Please note that all materials, snacks and refreshments are included in the price.
